Of course, lawyers make their livings off of dealing with unfortunate
circumstances. But, in reality, the work of lawyers who work to hold people
and companies responsible serve a greater purpose in society.
Every so often, as I did a couple of weeks back, I hear a potential juror
talk about the McDonald’s Coffee Case with some tone of disgust relative to
the excesses of our legal system. Actually, if it weren’t for good lawyers
holding companies accountable for either taking action to make their
products safer, or for continuing conduct which might result or has
resulted in (sometimes very serious) injury, safer measures would hardly
ever come into being.
A good link which sheds some light on the truth of what happened in the
famous coffee case is here.
